CLIENT: A soon-to-be announced publisher homebased in Iwakuni, Japan. The publisher's connections were networked through US military service members, especially through a group of United States Marine Corps Anime and Manga fans who enjoy a variety of science fiction and horror genres.

PURPOSE: This is a classic old-school freelance illustrative commission for a half-page spread in a new graphic novel involving contributions from thirteen artists from around the world which will be produced in Japanese and five other languages including English. The contract specifically states secrecy, but allows for the rendered images to be utilized as a teaser in political art and on social media.

MEDIA: My office supplies, ballpoint pens, a #2 graphite pencil and later completed over the entire month of November and the first half of December of 2021 with more ballpoints, a shit-ton of felt-tip pens, Pilot fine-point pens, black Rapidograph fine-point pens, black Higgins India ink, colored Prisma pencils, colored Prisma markers, watercolor paints and acrylic paints.

SIZE: 10" X 13".

SUBJECT: A rendered illustrated homage to Daniel Mann's 1971 American horror film "Willard," "Willard's" 1972 sequel "Ben" directed by Phil Karlson, the book "Ratman's Notebooks" by Stephen Gilbert, British author James Herbert's 1974 "The Rats" and 1979 "The Lair," and the rat-like creature with a human-like face character of "Brown Jenkin," a witch Keziah Mason's "Familiar" in H.P Lovecraft's "The Dreams in the Witch House."

YEAR: 2021 (15 DECEMBER)

INSPIRATION: Howard Phillips Lovecraft wrote that Brown Jenkin is "a small white-fanged furry thing", "no larger than a good-sized rat", which for years haunts the witch house and the town of Arkham in general, "nuzzl[ing] people curiously in the black hours before dawn".

“ Witnesses said it had long hair and the shape of a rat, but that its sharp-toothed, bearded face was evilly human while its paws were like tiny human hands. It took messages betwixt old Keziah and the devil, and was nursed on the witch’s blood—which it sucked like a vampire. Its voice was a kind of loathsome titter, and it could speak all languages. „

~ HPL, "The Dreams in the Witch-House"

When Walter Gilman managed to kill Mason Jenkin replied in kind by burrowing though his chest and eating his heart. Brown Jenkin's bones were later found with those of Mason and a small child by workers demolishing a slanting wall.

The origins of Brown Jenkin are subject to debate. Perhaps the most popular theory is that he is the child of Keziah and Nyarlathotep, the Lovecraftian deity she presumably serves. This is rather likely, considering that Lavinia Whateley mated with Yog-Sothoth, and that in The Lurker at the Threshold (posthumously published and co-written with August Derleth) there is a quote that reads: "'She affirm'd, and her good neighbours likewise, that it had been borne to her, and took oath that she did not know by what manner it had come upon her, for it was neither Beast nor Man but like to a monstrous Bat with human face.'"

Another theory, proposed by Weird Tales columnist Kenneth Hite, is that Brown Jenkin was a higher dimensional servitor of Nyarlathotep who was rewarded as being a familiar. However, as he was in the third dimension, he could only appear as a third-dimensional interpretation of what he was (this being similar to the vistas of Hyperspace in the story).

FROM BILL'S FACEBOOK: Hi folks! Apple Crown makes me ponder political philosophy 101.

If your Governor is Jay Inslee, Gretchen Whitmer, Phil Murphy, Kate Brown, Kathy Hochul, or Gavin Newsom; then the interior front foyer of your governor's mansion looks like this:

If your mayor is Jenny Durkan, Ted Wheeler, Muriel Bowser, Lori Lightfoot or especially Eric Garcetti, Bill Deblazio or London Breed; then the mayoral office suites of your city hall looks like this:

Chittering predatory scavengers with gnawing incisors!

LOCATION: Rendered at wife Lori's sanctuary art studio in eastern Central Arizona midway between Phoenix and Tucson.
