The 1880s Ghost Clipper 'Anastasia Rae' Drawn in January of 1980

ARTIST: William Louis ("Bill") McDonald Senior.

COMPANY: Argonaut-GreyWolf.

CLIENT: Dixie Hall and their contract greeting card printer in Laguna Beach.

PURPOSE: To promote my sketch render abilities after Dana Hills High School art teacher Ernesto Guerrero challenged me to draw an all-seasons/all-purpose greeting card for 1980 utilizing only professional paper, one bottle of India ink and my various quill tips. I did eventually license this drawing for six separate specialty greeting cards companies.

YEAR: 1980.

MEDIA: Drawn with Higgins India ink (Only) via quill point on Strathmore Drawing Paper.

NOTES: This was literally a black ink on white paper render with no ball points or Rapidograph pens. The limitations created a bizarre opportunity to create an 1880s and 1890s ghost clipper in arctic ice that would range the North Pacific, Bering Sea and Arctic Ocean waters. The vessel modeled was a 'Cutty Sark'--'Red Jacket'--'Flying Cloud'--'Moonraker'--class of American Clipper.

LOCATION: This high in the arctic latitudes where the icebergs crunched together was rendered in Laguna Beach, California in January of 1980.

My Inspirations included those magnificent "Windjammer" classes of fast and sleek merchant clipper sailing vessels that sailed between Hong Kong and San Francisco in mere weeks.
