'T' Shirt Design for 'Naked Couture'

CLIENT: Naked Couture. Naked Couture had a Japanese investor based out of Honolulu who had another Japanese partner in Lima, Peru.

YEAR: 1991, June, when I was twenty-nine.

PROJECT OR PURPOSE: They--Naked Couture--called my girlfriend at her job at Steve Gutierrez' "Sterling Art art supplies warehouse in Irvine--looking for me--while I was out working a detective assignment in the field and said they needed a "Shock Jock-style 'T' Shirt design and they needed it "Yesterday!" When I got home, she had already arranged her neon-pink bikini and matching "Hey Little Girl!" sun glasses on our big queen-sized bed and was wrangling one of my two pet rattlesnakes to stay put with my snake hook and three-pronged hoe. I grabbed my camera, snapped four Kodak 400 ASA color stills with my Canon AE-1 Program and put the snake back in his tank.

MEDIA: Black Higgins India ink with Pentel felt-tips and quill point pen nibs.

MODEL: California--Laguna Beach--Crotalus atrox western diamondback rattlesnake (Black phase and very rare).

NOTES: In California at the time, holding a valid fishing license issued by the state allowed one to possesses ("Temporarily") two rattlesnakes of any species for the purpose of conveying education, demonstrating safety, relocation for the purposes of conservation, cooking, skinning and eating. My girlfriend was a 5'3" 109 lb. half-Castilian Spanish Latina plus one-quarter English and one-quarter German with chestnut-brown locks and skin olive enough to wear neon pink, orange or green with bulletproof impunity.

Additional note: I was told over the phone from Hawaii to not waste my time with the beach sand elements. Just die the beach girl's sunning gear and ship the original to Honolulu via Fed-Ex. Payment was deposited electronically from the Bank of Tokyo to my Wells-Fargo main checking account prior to the call. Translation: Our Japanese investors had access to computers that could render any form of beach sand from the most pure whites of Queensland, Australia's beaches to the volcanic black sands of the Hawaiian Islands or Vanuatu. That included Riverbed Pebble-tech computer mapping. Forty thousand units shipped worldwide out of Bangkok around a month later.
